First appearances didn''t do much for me when I noticed Takagi Industrial''s gas water heater. It looked little, square, electronic and very Japanese. Out of politeness I acknowledged the representative''s smile and asked, "Oh, a little water heater, huh?" As I started to pass he replied: "Little, yes. But would you believe it''s rated up to 165,000 Btuh?" It is 24.5-in. tall, 16.5-in. wide and 8.3-in. deep. Do you need a lot of punch in a very little space? Well, this one is the ticket.One true piece of new equipment that I saw at the show is a new design for a PTAC through-the-wall air conditioner from Ice-Cap Inc. While I normally consider such devices more as over-the-counter than part of our business, this one has some interesting technical features. First, it is available with either manual or remote controls, and it has a hot-gas reheat feature for humidity control, which makes it especially desirable for use in managed-care facilities. This unit is available both for new construction projects and for retrofit and replacement of most standard PTAC units. It is available with heat pump, electric or hydronic heat and comes in capacities of 7,000-16,000 Btuh cooling.

[FIGURE 8 OMITTED]To give the water team more breathing room, the 3T group suggested that the water team divide the official start of the test into two components: (1) the BWP and the reverse osmosis and (2) the reverse osmosis and the other two subsystems (AES and PPS). In the iWRS system, the pivotal subsystem is the reverse osmosis. This system receives BWP effluent, processes it, and provides product water for the two downstream systems. In effect, the BWP is independent of the downstream systems, so it could conceivably be started early when the downstream systems were still being built. Because of the modularity of 3T, the initial iWRS could consist of the first two subsystems, with the output going to drain while the inoculation proceeded, and the second iWRS could include all four subsystems. In this manner, the water team started the test with only the first two subsystems in April 2000 and brought the other two systems online in December 2000 in time to make a January 2001 full start.

CPU systems are extremely stable and can be very energy efficient depending on duty cycle especially when combined with parallel LS circuits. Here, the duty cycle of a telehandler makes this very attractive. They feature a simple low-cost open center main valve converted to closed center with tailored spools and offer very good metering to minimize interference when multifunctioning.In the accompanying example, two separate valves art" used to control the functions. A 40 gpm valve is used for the boom up/down and retract/extend. A smaller 20 gpm valve is selected for tilt, frame level, left/right outriggers and auxiliary. An integrated circuit is affixed to the lower flow valve that provides load sense for the brakes, priority steering and pilot pressure. When the lift or telescopic function is activated the orifice is closed off and the pump goes to compensator pressure. It is also true for the tilt, frame level, outriggers and auxiliary functions. This is accomplished by sending the load sense signal through open center core of the 40 gpm valve on to the 20 gpm valve via power beyond. Since the pump in this example supplies only the flow requested any combination of valves is possible.
