The first step in assuring proper installation, after proper material selection, is mixing the refractory. However, in order in to properly mix it you must know how you intend to install it. There are four fundamentally different ways to install refractories:* The gunning method permits the handling of a large volume of materials. Water is added at the discharge nozzle or back at the charging chamber. The amount of water is determined at the point of installation by the nozzle man and also by the characteristics of the refractory. Forms are not required. The advantages, of course, are speed and versatility. Rebound losses mean that more material will be needed than for casting. Overage will vary considerably depending on whether a ceiling, a wall or a floor is being installed. Add optional fifth wheel arm, safety stop switch and guard kit, foam filled tires with aggressive tread, horn, light, dual wheels, and built-in battery charger. Stainless steel model (shown) is available for use in sterile environments where paint or powder coatings are prohibited Mobile Workstations, which are mini workstations and high-density storage cabinets on wheels, are designed for a range of industrial applications. Available in a variety of heights, widths, and depths, the mobile cabinets come in different configurations, providing various storage options. The seven different footprints of the cabinets, which can be combined in side-by-side and stacked configurations, come offered with various components and accessories. The cabinet drawers feature a 440 lb. load capacity and are available in seven full sidewall heights for maximum cubic storage capacity. Able to extend 100 percent from the housing, the drawers allow for full use of the furthest corners and accessibility to all contents. Each drawer has individual latches, which lock drawers closed for safe transport and the patented PreventTip interlock safety system prevents accidental cabinet tipping. The drawer compartment interiors can be individualized with subdividing options to meet specific needs. In the summer of 1999, we had used the bottom two layers of 3T to provide autonomous control for a single subsystem--a second-generation biological water processor--during a 450-day, 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a week test. Then in January 2000, the Advanced Water Research Group received ALS funding for the year-long IWRS test, involving four advanced water-recovery subsystems (Bonasso 2001) (see Advanced Water Recovery System sidebar).BuildupUsing 3T allowed us to develop the control for the IWRS in a modular fashion in two ways. First, moving from bottom to top (figure 4), each layer has its own data structures, timing constraints, and development tools that allow for parallel development of the software. Thus, we were able to develop skills sets based on the evolving hardware specifications and simultaneously develop the sequencer procedures. Early on, as the water research team developed the design for each subsystem, one part of the 3T team wrote the sequencer procedures for each subsystem in the RAPS language (which, in turn, is written in Lisp) (1) using virtual skills, that is, Lisp skills connected to a Lisp simulation of the expected hardware. A virtual simulation of, say, the reverse-osmosis subsystem could then be shown on a laptop to the WRS engineers and the control design refined in an iterative process even before the actual hardware was available. The primary result of this process was a set of skill specifications for each subsystem (figure 5).
