Electric radiant heaters are one of those technologies that seldom get a glance from me. And maybe that''s why I was attracted to this exhibit. I didn''t see anything I recognized. I walked over to see what those black crates were that BBC Industries was exhibiting. They didn''t look like much, and then the radiant heat hit me. Thermazone Black Body radiant heaters are simple, unpretentious and are available in sizes from 450 watts to 6,000 watts.A former employer of mine, Novar Controls Corp., shocked me out of my shoes with its exhibit. The old Tesla coil spark machine was gone but Novar''s entire line of building controls has undergone a complete redesign, which includes attractive packaging, enhanced communications and new product names. In particular, the product renamed Lingo can now converse with almost all manufacturers'' equipment in their own protocols, including Lon Works and BACnet.

Transformer-rectifiers have moveable parts that/end to wear out. However these machines can produce some of the best arc characteristics.A silicon-coated-rectifier (SCR) power source, electronically voltage-controlled, has no real moving parts other than the primary current contactor and cooling--fan the only parts that will wear out. If fabricator requires pulsed welding, the SCR power source starts to show its limitations and inverters become the power supply of choice.AC-DC inverters, which convert AC in put frequency to very high frequencies--up to 1,000 times that of input frequency--allow transformers and other components to be small in size and the power supply to be relatively lightweight. This high operating frequency enables the inverter to precisely control output power and to deliver smooth arc initiation with minimal or no spatter. Current ripple is low for a very stable arc:, even at low amperages. And the improved arc control can, in some cases, minimize electrode overheating and fume emissions. Finally, the smallish transformer allows for more efficient use of primary power compared to conventional power supplies.
