"Backpack sprayers for agriculture are the biggest application currently, but the inventor wants to expand applications to food and pharmaceutical," says Richardson. "Being an engineer myself, I saw that the potential uses were very broad. Plant managers and engineers always want to tweak a valve, but because this has a pre-set pressure, it becomes tamper proof."The first application in the beverage arena is likely to be foodservice. Vendors are notorious for altering the syrup/carbonated water ratios in drink dispensers, a practice that manufacturers abhor. The CPU system features a signal line from the pump load sense controller through the power core of the valve stack to tank that is drained until a function is activated (a spool is moved). When a lift, telescoping, tilt or auxiliary spool is moved, the signal line is blocked, the pressure builds and the pump goes to its compensated setting. This signal channel is supplied with oil though a 0.035 in. orifice which connects the power core to the open center passage.Individual spools meter the required flow and pressure to the function. The pump delivers the required flow at the pump compensator pressure setting. The pump is at standby (unloaded at approximately 350 psi) when all functions are in neutral. The CPU system makes it easier to start the engine and prevents "ghost" movements when the functions are in neutral. He responded to my challenge and was amazed to see contract cleaners spraying and hosing down his equipment with a vigor he never had imagine. He watched in horror as the cleaners dumped buckets of ice on the range tops and griddles to cool them before cleaning, then sprayed the exposed surfaces with caustic grease-cutting chemicals. He saw the cleaners start a revolving bake oven so they could hose off the individual decks as they rotated inside the oven cavity.The next day he called me and said, "I never would have believed what I saw. You were so right, as manufacturers, we have no idea what really occurs after midnight when the cleaning crews hit the kitchen."
