The following Wednesday nobody showed up. A week later, the table disappeared into the basement, where it soon became moldy from a water leak. It took a month before we could look at each other in the eye and the notion became, unanimously and without deliberation, a topic of taboo.But the idea of a round table, where no seat is privileged, and all eyes look through the same pocket of air, has continued its hold on me. After years of carrying the notion with me through travels and co-ops, I now find myself literally carried by the idea. A community around a table is--in many ways--the real thing, not just the launching pad. There is no more versatile machine in the mobile equipment marketplace than the skid-steer loader. And with typical yearly sales in excess of 60,000 units, it''s clear that these machines, seen by many as the Swiss Army knife of construction machines, have penetrated a wide range of applications.But not all of them, in part because of the very nature of the beast.A skid-steer loader, as the name indicates, maneuvers by "skidding"--slowing or stopping the wheels on one side of the machine, while keeping the other side rolling. This system, highly valued because of its simplicity and effectiveness, particularly in tight spaces, does have drawbacks in some applications. When operated in grassy areas, skidding the tires can scuff up the turf, a real nono in venues such as parks or golf courses. Even where ground disturbance is not an issue, tire wear, or even wearing of the surface on which the machine operates, can sometimes cause problems. Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters. These cutters'' geometry allows the operator to drill multi-layered truck frames in a single pass.
