Starting an electric engine oil pump just prior to engine cranking, for example, can provide a pre-lube function."Orr was describing the concept of Cat Electronics'' MorElectric system unveiled about a year ago. The MorElectric system is designed to drive a vehicle''s air conditioner, brake air compressor, water pump and other accessories electrically, versus being belt or gear driven. The system also includes a newly developed HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) package as well as an optional diesel-powered auxiliary power unit. I also was happy to see a new electronic balometer from Alnor. These devices, which read ceiling-mounted diffuser outputs in direct CFMs with no correction factors, are needed throughout the industry. However, they were usually very large, sensitive and expensive, so only the largest commercial shops had them, until now. Alnor just introduced its LoFlo balometer, a compact 10-500 CFM instrument designed specially for residential and light commercial applications.I took a minute to stop by some of the smoky denizens of the welding business. Uniweld Products has just come up with a new oxy/acetylene torch tip they call the Tuning Fork (because that''s what it looks like). It is specifically designed for the removal and installation of reversing valves. Flames coming from both tip surfaces surround the three-connection side of the reversing valve, allowing the whole assembly to be unbrazed in a single operation. 3. Welding position. The first performance characteristic to consider. High cellulose coatings, like those on E6010 and E6011 electrodes, generate a light slag that makes for rapid solidifying of the weld metal good for-out-of-position welds. Also good are rutile-fluxed electrodes-E6012 and E6013--that hold out-of-position weld metal in place as it solidifies.4. Welding current. Covered electrodes run on AC, DC, or both. When welding DC, the positive lead typically connects to the electrode (DCEP, or reverse polarity). Some suppliers design electrodes that weld with the electrode negative (DCEN, or straight polarity). Assure the electrode will perform with the available current.
