[FIGURE 1-2 OMITTED]When the magnetic bearings are energized, the motor and impellers, which are keyed directly to the magnetic shaft, levitate. Permanent-magnetic bearings do the primary work, while digitally controlled electromagnets provide the fine positioning. Four positioning signals per bearing hold the levitated assembly to a tolerance of 0.00002 in. As the levitated assembly moves from the center point, the electromagnets'' intensity is adjusted to correct the position. These adjustments occur 6 million times a minute. The software has been designed to automatically compensate for any out-of-balance condition in the levitated assembly.SHUTDOWNS AND POWER FAILURESWhen the compressor is not running, the shaft assembly rests on graphite-lined, radially located touchdown bearings. The magnetic bearings normally position the rotor in the proper location, preventing contact between the rotor and other metallic surfaces. If the magnetic bearings fail, the touchdown bearings (also known as backup bearings) are used to prevent a compressor failure. The following Wednesday nobody showed up. A week later, the table disappeared into the basement, where it soon became moldy from a water leak. It took a month before we could look at each other in the eye and the notion became, unanimously and without deliberation, a topic of taboo.But the idea of a round table, where no seat is privileged, and all eyes look through the same pocket of air, has continued its hold on me. After years of carrying the notion with me through travels and co-ops, I now find myself literally carried by the idea. A community around a table is--in many ways--the real thing, not just the launching pad. Controlling the Integrated Water-Recovery SystemIn this section, we describe the control tasks for the final IWRS system that went into test in 2001, first by subsystem and then for the IWRS as a whole (figure 8).The Biological Water ProcessorFeed water from the waste-water collection system (figure 3) first passes through the BWP. The main control task for the BWP is to keep the water in the gas-liquid-separator (GLS) (see the lozenge icon with the three-level switches in the upper left of figure 8) at mid-level, which is accomplished by varying the speed of the feed pump, and the draw from the reverse-osmosis main pump remains constant. The other requirement is to monitor the pressures in the recycle loop, as well as in the nitrifier tubes, and carry out automatic shutdown procedures in the case of off-nominal values. For example, if one of the nitrifier tubes shows too high a pressure, the water and air pumps associated with this tube are shut down, and a warning is issued.
