At least they''re still playing together. Not so with a pair we''ll call Denise and Sarah. Denise invited Sarah to join a group that matched four days of golf with a Solheim Cup trip to Wales. I''d like to begin the new year with a discussion of the basics of a diesel fuel system with an in-line pump and follow up in February with the distributor type pump system. As you know, all diesel systems have a fuel tank, one fuel filter (possibly more depending on the installation), a transfer pump, a high-pressure fuel-injection pump, high pressure fuel lines, low-pressure fuel lines, injector nozzles, and sometimes return (fuel overflow) lines. Figure 1 represents a typical diesel fuel system.

On some systems, a portion of the fuel is used for lubrication and cooling. This fuel bypasses the nozzle tip and returns to the fuel tank.Let''s take a quick look at the individual components that make up the fuel system.* Fuel Tanks -- All fuel tanks have a fuel intake fitting on top of the tank for filling and a drain or outlet fitting on the bottom. One or two additional fuel fittings may be found for returning unburned fuel to the tank.Fuel tanks are not trouble-free components. Metal tanks will eventually rust. The rust, combined with water from condensation, forms a mud inside the tank. Sludge forms in the tank when unburned carbon from injector nozzles is carried back to the tank with overflow fuel and combines with water. Thin flakes of hardened mud or sludge can easily plug the fuel outlet hole. This usually occurs when the tank is severely shaken.

Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters. These cutters'' geometry allows the operator to drill multi-layered truck frames in a single pass.
