Some brands offer accessory "rotating" or "turbo" nozzles that clean more effectively than standard adjustable nozzles because they spin the water stream. Heavier-duty units generally come with four or five color-coded, individual nozzle tips (three are shown here). They create specific fan patterns: wider (for using detergents), medium (for general cleaning) and narrower (for blasting deep stains). "We''ve finished the GPS collection project for fire hydrants and have since GPS-ed storm drain inlets and about 20% of the water valves," says David Allen, GIS manager for Euless. "Our storm drain maps were generated for a Governmental Accounting Standards Board statement but are useful to the fire department in containing chemical spills."Another benefit: Firefighters no longer have to GPS-locate hydrants. "I typically go out and GPS the new ones as they are installed," Allen says. "Since this is only a few each month, it is easy for me to keep the maps current." The operation of the feed system is controlled by the patented Vermeer AutoFeed II system, which is designed to monitor and regulate feed rates automatically. The system monitors engine rpm and regulates the amount of hydraulic oil flow to the feed roller motor, based on the engine speed. "It''s an engine-load sensing device," said Brent Bartels, project engineer at Vermeer. "AS wood is fed into the cutting mechanism, that slows the cutter disc down, which loads the engine down so the engine speed is slowing down. If that were to continue, the engine would eventually stall. Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters.
