There is a better way.A company called Ecoflex now has pre-assembled and insulated lengths of single and dual-pipe runs -- as long as 650 ft. -- that can be laid quickly by a minimal crew. Cross-linked polyethylene pipe is available in sizes to 4 in. and all surfaces are smooth as well as non-corrodable, and the insulation doesn''t absorb water. "There''s a lack of proper fuel maintenance on many farms. Farmers don''t change tank filters regularly, and they don''t drain deposits from the bottom of tanks."Caring for stored fuelChuck Hamilton, technical service engineer with Country Energy in Minneapolis, Minnesota, says 90% of the diesel fuel problems he sees are from dirt, rust, and water contamination. "Even many cold-weather problems are from water contamination, not fuel gelling. The vast majority of these problems can be eliminated with proper fuel tank maintenance on the farm," he says. In 1995, they put a man in an airlock linked to a 10-foot-diameter chamber full of wheat (Laifook and Ambrose 1997). For 15 days, the man lived, worked, and exercised in the chamber as the wheat crop took in his carbon dioxide and produced oxygen for him. The control system--our first for ALS--monitored and provided caution and warnings for the climate and nutrient environment of the wheat crop.
