This article describes this new compressor technology and its first use in an ARI-certified chiller design.THE BEARINGSTraditional centrifugal compressors use roller bearings and hydrodynamic bearings, both of which consume power and require oil and a lubrication system. Recently, ceramic roller bearings, which avoid issues related to oil and reduce power consumption, were introduced to the HVAC industry. The lubrication of these bearings is provided by the refrigerant itself. (1)Magnetic-bearing technology is significantly different. A digitally controlled magnetic-bearing system, consisting of both permanent magnets and electromagnets, replaces conventional lubricated bearings. The frictionless compressor shaft is the compressor''s only moving component. It rotates on a levitated magnetic cushion (Figure 1). Magnetic bearings--two radial and one axial--hold the shaft in position (Figure 2).

There is also a new header height sensing system for rigid platforms. The new mechanical header height sensing system for 600 Rigid Platforms is a major improvement for rigid platform operation. This system automatically maintains a consistent cut height from 4- to 14-inches over uneven field terrain.Cutting capacity has also been improved on the 600 Series Platforms.7020 tractorsDeere has also introduced three new models of 7020 tractors designed with new styling, cabs, frames, and engines for greater productivity, reliability and value. The tractors are the 7720 rated at 140 PTO hp, the 7820 at 155-hp and the 7920 which features 170-hp.

Continuing its fast-paced engine development efforts, Kohler Co. used the recent OPEI Lawn & Garden Expo to introduce several new gasoline engine models across its entire horsepower range. Included was a new horizontal shaft configuration for the Aegis liquid-cooled engine series; the addition of 20 and 23 hp models to the Triad OHC engines; the availability of electronic fuel injection for its Command Pro 26 hp vertical shaft model; 16 and 17 hp versions of its single-cylinder vertical shaft Command engines; and an 8.5 hp Command Pro CS horizontal shaft engine.
