With the advent of the CE-mark requirements in Europe, many manufacturers now design to the International Standard IEC 974-1. One of the requirements of this standard is to place an IP rating on the nameplate of the machine to indicate the degree of protection provided by the enclosure to avoid damage from water and foreign objects.Purchasers of power supplies must consider the power they will be putting into the machines which operate from line power or some other .source of electricity. Ratings list voltage, number of phases, frequency, and current level when the power source is running at rated output. Most motor-generator sets require three-phase AC power. The path of fuel flow through the system is pretty simple. Diesel fuel tanks normally are positioned above the engine''s fuel-injection pump to provide a positive pressure head to the fuel filter and transfer pump. This positioning assures easy priming of the system and assists fuel flow as the filters become more restricted. The fuel is moved by the transfer pump (usually a diaphragm type).The transfer pump, normally with the help of gravity, pulls the fuel through a primary filter and pushes it through a secondary filter before the fuel reaches the main pump. When a camshaft lobe in the injection pump lowers the plunger, the transfer pump pushes fuel into the chamber above the plunger in proportion to the position of the metering system. As the engine camshaft rotates, the injection pump plunger rises, pushing the fuel at high pressure out of the delivery valve, into the high-pressure fuel lines, and on to the injector nozzle. The high-pressure fuel inside the injector nozzle surrounds the valve (piston) and pushes up on the piston step against a predetermined spring setting. As the piston lifts, fuel leaves the nozzle tip and flows out the nozzle orifice into the pre-combustion chamber or cylinder. "I don''t want to raise hopes too much, but we found that fairly consistently we could identify what room of the building the firefighter was in and to consistently localize where he was to within 15 or 20 feet," says Deputy Chief Bill Godfrey, Orange County Fire and Rescue Training and Information Technology Division. "From my perspective, that''s a win. If you can take a space as large as a supermarket and land me within 20 feet of a down firefighter, I can find him with a thermal imaging camera."
