The new control system also includes an optional pattern changer valve on the 420D and 430D, allowing the operator to select different control patterns. "This is helpful if the machine is to be used in the rental markets," said Carman. "The feature allows the machine to be set up to match the type of control pattern with which the operator may have experience. With this feature, the operator can get on the machine and very quickly become efficient rather than having to relearn how the controls operate the machine." In the standard configuration, the 416D is powered by the naturally aspirated 4.2 L Cat 3054B diesel engine rated 75 hp net at 2200 rpm. The 4.0 L turbocharged Cat 3054T diesel engine rated 80 hp net at 2200 rpm is available as an option. Both engines are four-cylinder direct-injection units. The typical Avalon autoette is a one-cylinder, 12-horsepower, gas-fueled cart that does about 12 miles per hour. By tweaking the engine you can milk a zippy 18 mph from it. The town''s speed limit is only 20, so you don''t need much more zip than that. An autoette gets about 50 mpg from its six-gallon gas tank (unleaded regular, $2.50 a gallon out here), although all this is a bit hard to confirm since carts don''t have speedometers or odometers. Most are made by Yamaha, and most are white.John Regalado runs the town''s Yamaha dealership. Because the city limits the number of carts, Regalado doesn''t sell many new ones; service is where the money is. His "showroom" is a two-stall repair garage with a couple of newish models parked out front. Compactly built, with California beach-boy looks, Regalado''s also a city councilman and the mayor pro tem. He kindly wipes the cart grease from his palms before shaking hands. "Kids here look forward to getting golf carts like mainland kids wait to buy cars," he says. "They go cruising after school and scoot out to Buena Vista Point to party at night. You know, teen things." I don''t know anything else nonexplosive, that you can pick up with one hand, and that can move five tons one hundred feet--with safety, precision, and astonishingly little work. Like many good tools the Tirfor is a thing of beauty, superbly designed and engineered. With 100 feet of cable (or more) its reach is much greater than a come-along, and this can often make all the difference. Its speed is much faster, too, not just the speed in moving something (the lever is double-acting) but speed in setting up or moving the set-up around. Often when you need to move something, minutes if not seconds count. The action is precise. A come-along winds the cable upon itself, and often when the cable comes under tension the cable wrap slips a bit. The resulting jerks can cause all kinds of problems in a situation where precise movement counts, and a sudden shift in load may cause failure somewhere else. Finally, the Tirfor has a much more effective (and safer) mechanism for smoothly lowering a heavy load. Most (ratcheted) come-alongs are very poor at this.
